ECM Initiates Voter Re-registration for Parliamentary Elections

MV+ News Desk | February 3, 2024

The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced the commencement of re-registration for voters, which will be open until 4:00 pm on February 7th.

Eligible individuals are encouraged to utilise the online re-registration portal provided by the ECM for this purpose.

This opportunity is particularly relevant for voters whose current addresses have changed since the last presidential elections, as it allows them to update their registration details in preparation for the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Assistance for re-registration will be available for voters residing in the atolls through their respective council offices. In the capital city of Male, online registration services will be accessible at the Election Center located at Dharubaaruge.

The Election Centre will operate during specific hours:

  • From 8:30 am to 3 pm on regular days (excluding public holidays)
  • From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on public holidays
  • From 3 pm to 5 pm on Fridays

Individuals who wish to register at a different location from where they were registered for the second round of the last presidential election can also do so within this re-registration period.

Notable categories of individuals encouraged to re-register include resort employees, residents of industrial areas, persons residing abroad, and inmates.

To verify their registered voting location, individuals can access information through the EC website or by sending an SMS to 1414, typing ‘VR (Space) ID card number’.

ECM’s Vice Chairman Ismail Habeeb highlighted improvements to the online registration process, including the acceptance of non-PDF format photos and the inclusion of re-registration through eFaas, addressing previous challenges with obtaining OTP.

During the online re-registration process, applicants will be required to submit a copy of an official document confirming their voter identity. Those applying through eFaas with a verified account need not submit additional photographs.

A total of 608 polling stations will be established for the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 17. Voters seeking information about their designated ballot box can do so by contacting the Election Commission hotline at 1414 or by sending an SMS with their ID card number to 1414.
