The Maldives Red Crescent (MRC) has revealed its ongoing efforts in executing the “Strengthening Preparedness and Resilience through Inclusive Community Governance (SPRING) Project,” in conjunction with the National Disaster Management Authority and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, supported by USAID BHA.

The primary objective of the SPRING Project is to strengthen the resilience of all sectors of communities in the Maldives against disasters.

A fundamental aspect of MRC’s SPRING Project is the “Hushiyaaru” campaign. As a humanitarian organisation dedicated to bolstering disaster preparedness, climate resilience, and humanitarian assistance, MRC is uniquely positioned to emphasise the urgent requirement for communities to be better equipped to confront the challenges presented by climate change.

The overarching aim of the campaign is to cultivate climate-ready communities throughout the Maldives.

The campaign is structured around three core objectives:

Raising Awareness: The primary aim is to enhance public comprehension of the impacts of climate change on the Maldives. The campaign seeks to highlight the critical significance of proactive preparedness in tackling imminent challenges.

Behavioural Change: The campaign strives to instil positive changes in attitudes and behaviours within communities. By advocating for climate resilience practices, the objective is to empower individuals and communities to take proactive measures in confronting climate-related threats.

Inclusivity: Through the campaign, there is a concerted effort to promote active engagement and ownership of climate readiness initiatives. There is a particular focus on vulnerable groups, including Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Migrant Workers, the Elderly, and Women. It is believed that the involvement of every community member is essential in constructing climate-ready communities.
