Govt to Lease 25 Uninhabited Islands for Research and Social Development

The Maldives Land and Survey Authority (MLSA) has opened applications for island councils to lease uninhabited islands for research and social development purposes; a total of 25 uninhabited islands are available.
The move follows the gazetting of the “Regulation on the Allocation of Uninhabited Islands for Uses Other than Fisheries, Agriculture, and Economic Purposes” last year.
The MLSA’s announcement today invites applications from councils interested in acquiring these islands for research and social development purposes. The islands will be awarded to the best proposals presented.
The list of uninhabited islands include:
1. Hdh. Faridhoo – 26.46 hectares
2. Hdh. Hirinaidu – 6.40 hectares
3. Sh. Narurinbudhoo – 27.58 hectares
4. Sh. Migudu – 8.66 hectares
5. N. Dheefuram – 2.37 hectares
6. N. Inguraidhoo – 13.12 hectares
7. R. Hibudhoo – 2.48 hectares
8. R. Huhudhool – 1.63 hectares
9. R. Neyo – 7.19 hectares
10. B. Maa’doo – 25.93 hectares
11. B. Dhakan’dhoo – 5.73 hectares
12. M. Maahuraa – 4.84 hectares
13. F. Makunueri – 1.28 hectares
14. Dh. Fenfushi – 3.51 hectares
15. Dh. Minimasgali – 4.64 hectares
16. Th. Fenmeerufushi – 1.70 hectares
17. Th. Kakolhas – 16.19 hectares
18. L. Kandaru – 4.27 hectares
19. L. Bodumaabulhi – 5.07 hectares

Uninhabited islands located up to 700 meters from residential areas fall within the jurisdiction of councils, some of which are currently unused.
President Muizzu has previously highlighted that uninhabited islands within an atoll’s jurisdiction will be allocated with the consent of all resident communities within the atoll, pursuant to an agreement between the government and the council.
