The Maldives Police Service (MPS) has made an additional arrest in connection with the assault on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem.
A Police Media Official has confirmed that on Friday, a 22-year-old Maldivian male was placed under arrest in relation to the case. The Criminal Court ruled yesterday that he will be remanded in custody until the end of the trial.
Two other individuals were previously arrested in connection with the same case and were placed in custodial remand until the end of the trial on February 2. These individuals are Midhhath Adam, 23, of Riveli, Raa Atoll Alifushi, and Mohamed Jazlan, 22, of Javaahiru Villa, Thundi, L Gan. The address in Male’ for both of these individuals listed in the court order is H. Fenigehlidhaage.
Shameem was attacked in front of his home near Noor Mosque on Wednesday morning while he was returning home after dropping his child off at school late last month.
The attackers are believed to have attempted to strike Shameem on the head with a hammer; however, Shameem managed to defend himself, resulting in injuries to his left forearm instead.
During a press conference held following the incident and subsequent arrests, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau stated that the attack on the PG was premeditated and well-planned, with an attempt to conceal the identities of those involved.
In light of similar attacks in the past, the police have suggested that there may be additional individuals involved in orchestrating the attack besides the two assailants.
The Commissioner asserted that the police services will not tolerate such attacks in the country and that the case is being investigated as a high-priority matter.
