In his address, President Muizzu underscored the importance of upholding core Maldivian values, including Islam, the Dhivehi language, culture, and tradition, to shape the nation’s future. He addressed the pivotal role of the newly established senior centre in this national endeavour, urging older citizens to take full advantage of its services. Assuring government support, he pledged to prioritise the needs of senior citizens and provide necessary assistance.

Highlighting past neglect, President Muizzu affirmed the government’s commitment to rectifying disparities, particularly regarding centres for people with disabilities. He reiterated the Administration’s dedication to offering special consideration to vulnerable groups, including senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, within housing projects and other initiatives.

Minister of Social and Family Development, Aishath Shiham, highlighted the collaborative effort involved in determining the services offered at the senior centre. She assured that plans are underway to establish similar centres in rural areas.

The ‘Isravvehinge Naadhee’ senior centre, housed in the former National Centre for the Holy Quran, aims to enhance the well-being of elderly citizens by providing comprehensive services. These include exercise programmes, recreational activities such as carrom, chess, and table tennis, as well as mental health and financial empowerment initiatives.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information, and Arts outlined plans for holistic development programs, including hydrotherapy and balance training classes, to support the physical and mental health of attendees. Additionally, ‘Agecare Maldives’ will conduct regular health screenings to promote overall well-being.

Various ministries and associations have committed to providing diverse services at the senior centre. The Ministry of Social Affairs and Family Affairs aims to establish the centre as a hub for accessing essential services tailored to the elderly population.

President Muizzu concluded the ceremony by launching the photo competition “Ufaa” and inspecting the facilities of the newly inaugurated centre.
