The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has opened registrations for representatives of candidates until the 24th of this month.
According to the guidelines set forth by the ECM, candidates can appoint representatives who are at least 18 years of age, free of any criminal convictions, and not currently engaged in election-related duties mandated by the Commission. Furthermore, individuals ineligible to serve as representatives include judges, members or heads of independent institutions, law enforcement officers, or individuals under detention due to criminal charges.
To qualify as a representative, individuals must adhere to a stringent set of criteria, which includes a clean record regarding the Election Commission’s Code of Conduct and no prior convictions for electoral offenses within the past five years.
In a bid to streamline the process, the Election Commission will issue digital passes to all representatives appointed for this election cycle. Applications for representation can be submitted via email or directly to the Election Centre.
The call for registrations comes in tandem with the announcement of candidates for next month’s parliamentary elections. A total of 381 individuals have submitted applications to contest 93 constituencies. Notably, four candidates have withdrawn their nominations following the opening of this representative initiative.
