President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced last night the confirmation of two key dates for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, pursuant to an agreement inked between the two nations.

Per the terms of the agreement, India is slated to recall all military personnel stationed in the Maldives by May 10 of this year. The initial batch is scheduled to depart by March 10, comprising personnel stationed at one of the three landing stations facilitating the operation of emergency response aircraft provided to the Maldives by India.

The remaining military personnel stationed at the two other platforms are also expected to be withdrawn by the stipulated deadline of May 10.

Addressing the public during his visit to Feydhoo, Muizzu underscored the significance of this development as a testament to the will of the Maldivian people. He reiterated his commitment to fulfilling their mandate and expressed confidence in achieving the complete withdrawal of foreign military presence as promised.

Highlighting the diplomatic efforts underpinning the withdrawal process, Muizzu emphasised the importance of regional stability in the decision-making process. He reaffirmed his administration’s adherence to democratic principles and underscored the imperative of respecting sovereign decisions of nations in fostering regional peace.

In line with the transition, the two nations have agreed to replace military personnel with qualified civilians tasked with operating the emergency response aircraft provided by India. This move aligns with Muizzu’s previous assurances of training local personnel to assume responsibility for the operation of these aircraft.

As the withdrawal of Indian troops progresses, Muizzu reiterated his administration’s commitment to diplomatic engagement and adherence to democratic principles in shaping regional dynamics. He reiterated the importance of respecting sovereign decisions and fostering mutual cooperation among nations for the collective pursuit of peace and stability in the region.
