Gov’t Grants MVR 1.5 Million for Mosque Renovations in Addu City

The government has allocated MVR 1.5 million to the Addu City Council for the refurbishment of mosques within the city. 

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, alongside Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, paid a visit to Addu City today, engaging with members of the Addu City Council in the afternoon.

Following discussions, Minister Shaheem announced the allocation of MVR 1.5 million from the Mosque Fund, to be administered by the Council for the renovation of 68 mosques across Addu City. This substantial allocation marks the first instance of such significant government expenditure specifically directed towards mosque renovations in Addu City.

A senior government official present at the meeting between President Muizzu and the Addu City Council revealed that Addu Mayor Ali Nizar confirmed the receipt of the allocated funds in the council’s bank account.

Minister Shaheem also disclosed ongoing efforts to accelerate the construction of the Islamic Center in Addu City’s Hithadhoo district, with plans to finalize the project by May 2025.

Subsequent to his visit to Addu City, President Muizzu is scheduled to continue his tour, encompassing Fuvahmulah City, Gaafu Alifu atoll, and Gaafu Dhaalu atoll. Accompanied by senior government officials, the tour is slated to conclude on Thursday.
