Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, reiterated the government’s commitment to maintaining the purchase price of fish at no less than MVR 20 per kilogram during parliamentary questioning today.

Responding to speculation about a potential reduction in the purchase price, Minister Shiyam dismissed any such intentions, emphasising that there were no ongoing discussions to decrease the price at which the government procures fish from fishermen.

Addressing concerns raised by Maradhoo MP Ibrahim Shareef regarding potential financial losses incurred through buying and selling fish at MVR 20 per kilogram, the Minister acknowledged a deficit of MVR 6 in such transactions.

The assurance echoes President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign pledge to uphold the price of fish at MVR 20 per kilogram, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting the fishing industry and ensuring fair compensation for fishermen.
