MIFCO, the Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, has announced plans to introduce a large foreign fishing vessel to its operations this month to coincide with the peak fishing season; the fishing vessel is being brought from Srilanka.

The vessel, known as the Maskira, boasts a capacity of 3,000 metric tonnes and is expected to address capacity constraints faced by local fishermen during this busy period. Additionally, MIFCO is working to bring another vessel into operation to further support fishing activities.

Muaz Ali, General Manager of MIFCO, has stated that the company intends to leverage the foreign vessels to access international markets for Maldivian fish. Plans are also underway to facilitate quality testing within Maldives by foreign companies to mitigate the risk of rejected shipments abroad.

The Maskira is scheduled to dock at Kooddoo island’s port, where it will be loaded for export to European markets. Buyers will conduct inspections at the port to ensure compliance with quality standards.

According to reports, the move is in line with government efforts to revitalise MIFCO’s profitability, enhance market access and preserve the quality of locally produced fish for international trade.
