Island Aviation Service (IAS) Deputy Managing Director Ali Salim has announced plans to deploy a seaplane for air ambulance services starting from the 15th of this month.

The air ambulance initiative was initially launched with Dash 8 aircraft to offer emergency medical assistance to individuals across various regions of the country. However, the government has opted to utilise a seaplane for the National Ambulance Service due to the fact that numerous islands in remote provinces lack access to conventional airport facilities.

Speaking to PSM News, Salim confirmed that a seaplane will be introduced into the air ambulance service commencing on the 15th of this month.

“At the President’s request, preparations are underway to introduce a seaplane (into the air ambulance service). Provisions will be made for transporting patients on stretchers if required, with the seaplane set to be operational by the 15th,” explained Salim.

This development holds significant importance given the centralised structure of the healthcare system in Maldives, and logistical challenges posed by the nation’s geography.

Addressing the matter, State Minister of Health Ahmed Qasim underscored the diligent operation of the sea ambulance fleet in conjunction with land-based ambulances.

“We are committed to enhancing maritime patient transport services, bolstering resources, training personnel, and addressing any deficiencies in medical staffing,” stated the State Minister.

A trial run of the ambulance service was conducted yesterday.

The air ambulance service is being launched in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) of Maldives, Aasandha Company Ltd and Maldives Airports Company Ltd (MACL).
