The Ministry of Higher Education has announced plans to provide financial support to students hailing from provinces who have enrolled in the free degree programme in Male City. Speaking at a news conference on Thursday,  Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Maryam Mariya stated that students will receive a stipend of MVR 6,000 per month to assist with their living expenses.

The announcement comes alongside the unveiling of an additional 500 higher education opportunities. The ministry emphasized its commitment to prioritizing students from provincial backgrounds who have opted to pursue education in Male City. This move is poised to alleviate financial burdens for these students, as highlighted by a statement from the ministry.

“While the free degree programme currently covers course fees, many students encounter challenges in meeting other essential expenses, particularly accommodation,” explained Ahmed Shafiu, a state minister within the ministry. “This stipend provision acknowledges the additional financial support required, especially by students from the provinces.”

Elaborating on the mechanism of the stipend, the ministry clarified that eligible students could request the monthly payment of MVR 6,000, which will be provided through a loan structure. The repayment of the loan is scheduled six months following the completion of studies.

The decision to introduce the stipend follows extensive feedback from students expressing concerns about financial constraints. In addition to the stipend, students are set to benefit from various concessions as part of this support package.

The free degree programme, initially launched by the preceding government, has seen significant uptake, with over 18,000 students currently enrolled and more than 6,000 students having already completed their degrees.
