President Mohammed Muizzu announced a cap on electricity and water bills while speaking to the B.Eydhafushi community last night.
Electricity and water bills will remain consistent with those of a typical month, providing relief to households observing Ramadan, the President stated. He highlighted the common grievances expressed by citizens regarding inflated bills during this time and assured that such concerns would be addressed this year.
Furthermore, the President disclosed that STELCO, the national utility provider, has been instructed to revoke any previously imposed additional charges.
“It is a pleasure for me to give such reliefs to the people. The people are in a very difficult situation. The economy is in a very difficult situation.” said the President.
In addition to the cap on utility bills, the President announced plans to distribute a 10 kg basket of essential food items, including flour, to every household throughout Ramadan.
Moreover, President Muizzu revealed measures to ease financial burdens on local councils, stating that mosques’ electricity bills will be charged at domestic rates rather than government rates.
The announcement comes amidst concerns over rising utility costs during the festive period.
