Parliamentary Committee Approves Hassan Zakariyya’s Appointment to ECM

The Parliamentary Committee on Independent Institutions has given its approval for the appointment of Hassan Zakariyya to the vacant position within the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM).
According to reports, the committee unanimously passed the resolution last week.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu put forward the nomination of Hassan Zakariyya, who currently serves as the Secretary General at ECM, to the parliament on February 18. The nomination has since undergone review and has been transmitted to parliament representatives for consideration.
The vacancy in the ECM arose following the conclusion of Ismail Habeeb Abduh-Raheem’s tenure as Vice President of ECM.
In addition to Zakariyya, 13 other individuals submitted applications for the vacant position. It’s worth noting that the tenure for a member of the commission spans 4 years.
