A Sri Lankan national has been fined MVR 50,000 by the Criminal Court for attempting to smuggle shark fins out of the Maldives.

The prosecution pressed charges after shark fins were discovered in the individual’s luggage at Velana International Airport (VIA) last year. During the hearing, the accused admitted to the crime. The Maldives Customs Act stipulates that such offences carry a prison sentence of six months to two years or a fine between MVR 10,000 and MVR 240,000.

The judge determined that a fine of MVR 50,000 was appropriate, considering the best interests of all parties involved. The decision took into account documents provided by the defendant showing that their child was hospitalised following an accident.

The individual has been ordered to pay the fine within one month.

Shark fishing, the trade of shark products, and their export are illegal under Maldivian law. Despite shark attacks causing fatalities, injuries, and challenges for fishermen, there have been calls to legalise shark fishing. However, these calls face strong opposition from environmental advocates who argue for the continuation of the ban. The government has yet to make a decision on this matter.
