Speaker Abdul Raheem Moves into Official Residence
Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has relocated to Muraidhooge, the official residence designated for the Parliament Speaker.
The Parliament Secretariat announced that Speaker Abdul Raheem moved into the residence on Friday.
Speaker Abdul Raheem communicated his decision to move to Muraidhooge through a letter to the Parliament’s General Purpose Committee last Wednesday. In his letter, he proposed several changes to the staffing structure at the residence, including renaming one post, revoking four positions, and introducing four new ones. The Committee approved his proposal unanimously, with all eight members in attendance voting in favour.
Muraidhooge was declared the official residence of the Parliament Speaker in 2021 following an amendment to the law. This amendment was prompted by an assassination attempt on then-speaker Mohamed Nasheed as he exited his personal residence. Prior to this, official residences were provided only for the President and the Vice President. The amendment also allocated an official residence to the Chief Justice.
The law mandates that the state must provide official residences for these top officials and their families, along with the necessary staff and expenses. These residences must be equipped to implement essential security measures, with the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) responsible for security.
