Speaker of Parliament Affirms Commitment to Constitutional Duties
The Speaker of the Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdullah, has pledged that the 20th Parliament will diligently uphold the rights enshrined in the Constitution and ensure institutional accountability.
His remarks were made on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of the Green Constitution’s adoption, which President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom ratified on August 7, 2008.
In his address to Parliament members, the Speaker expressed gratitude to those involved in drafting the Constitution, particularly the members of the Special Assembly and Qasim Ibrahim, who presided over the process.
Abdul Raheem reiterated his commitment to the Parliament’s duties, stating, “I assure the people of the Maldives that this Parliament will fulfil its responsibilities in ensuring our rights under the Constitution and holding institutions accountable.”
The current Constitution, drafted by the Special Assembly in 2004, has been in effect for 16 years. It represents a significant achievement, particularly in establishing a distinct and separate state.
