20-Year-Old Critical at IGMH After Laamu Racing Crash
A 20-year-old Maldivian man is in critical condition at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) after sustaining serious injuries when his motorbike plunged into the sea during a racing event in Laamu Atoll.
According to details provided by the Maldives Police Service (MPS), authorities were alerted around 9:54 am yesterday after the rider lost control of his motorbike during the “RAAS Championship – Laamu Edition”.
Police said the rider lost control of his motorbike while participating in the event, causing the vehicle to veer off course and plunge into the sea with the rider.
The “RAAS Championship – Laamu Edition” took place on September 18 and 19, hosted by the Racing Association of the Maldives following public notices issued by the Secretariat of the Laamu Gan Council.
To accommodate the speed trials and racing track, local authorities closed key stretches of the road network in Laamu Gan to vehicle traffic from 1:00 PM on September 17 through 8:00 PM on September 19, diverting four-wheelers and heavy vehicles to alternative routes across the island.
An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
