41 Residents From Two Building Evacuated After Malé Maafannu House Fire

A total of 41 people living in two buildings affected by a fire in Malé have been temporarily evacuated, with four people receiving treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said.

NDMA’s Emergency Management Team is currently operating at the scene of the fire, which broke out last night at Ma. Dhoogasvilla. Fifteen expatriates were safely evacuated from five rooms in the two-storey building where the fire originated.

A further 26 residents of the adjacent building, Ma. Dhoogas 1, have been temporarily evacuated after the fire disrupted water services to the building. The group comprises 20 Maldivians and six expatriates.

NDMA said the affected residents are being provided with essential shelter and other assistance. Sponsors of the expatriate residents have also been contacted and instructed to make arrangements for their continued support.

Four people who were residing in the building where the fire broke out were taken to IGMH. One is in critical condition and receiving treatment on a ventilator, while the other three sustained varying degrees of burns. NDMA said the four victims comprise three Indian nationals and one Sri Lankan national.

Police had previously said the fire incident was reported at around 5:27am, following a gas cylinder explosion. Authorities are continuing to respond to the incident and provide assistance to those affected.
