A Woman, Partner and Accomplice Jailed for Murder of Newborn Grandchild
Court jails three over newborn infant murder case
The Criminal Court has sentenced three people to prison after finding them guilty of murdering a newborn infant in a case dating back to 2019.
The individuals convicted include the infant’s grandmother, her partner and a third accomplice, who authorities allege was the biological father of the child. The court delivered its verdict during closed proceedings last Thursday.
According to information available from the case, all three defendants admitted to the offence and entered into plea agreements with the state before sentencing.
Court findings determined that the infant’s grandmother played a leading role in the murder. She was assisted by her partner and the partner of the infant’s mother in carrying out the crime.
The mother of the deceased infant was reportedly under the age of 18 at the time of the incident.
The killing took place in 2019 on an island in a central atoll of the Maldives. Following the conclusion of the case, the Criminal Court sentenced all three convicted individuals to prison.
Further details regarding the length of the prison terms have not been disclosed.
