Aasandha to Cover Prescription Glasses From 15 January
Prescription glasses from approved private clinics and optical shops are now covered by Aasandha
The government has announced that the universal health insurance scheme, Aasandha, will now cover prescription glasses purchased from registered private clinics and optical shops nationwide, effective 15 January.
The move is aimed at easing financial burdens for citizens requiring vision correction while improving access to essential eye care services. Eyeglasses, though crucial for individuals with visual impairments, can be costly. Recognising this, the government has integrated optical services under Aasandha’s coverage.
This expansion follows the successful launch of a free eyeglass service at the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) in July 2025, which experienced high demand and led to the opening of a second outlet in Hulhumalé.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu engaged directly with citizens on healthcare concerns, including gaps in Aasandha’s reach, during public consultations held late last year. In response, the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) prioritised expanding the scheme’s benefits and collaborated with stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the new policy.
