Adeeb, who recently received treatment at the emergency room of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), subsequently applied for permission to seek medical treatment abroad.
According to his political party, the Maldives Transformation and Democracy Party (MTD), Adeeb is currently undergoing treatment for a severe neurological illness. The party claims that he became ill during his imprisonment, which began in 2015.

Although Adeeb was recently discharged from IGMH, his condition remains critical, as stated by his family.
In 2020, Adeeb was sentenced to 20 years in prison and fined MVR 2 million in relation to the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) corruption scandal. However, due to his deteriorating health, he was transferred from jail to house arrest after the sentencing.
