Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb, currently serving a corruption sentence, has formally requested an extension of his medical treatment period.

On 11th July, Adeeb departed for Singapore under the custody of the Maldives Correctional Service and police security, with a ten-day period allocated for his medical treatment. However, his expected return on Friday did not occur as planned.

In response to queries about Adeeb’s delayed return, a spokesperson for the Maldives Correctional Service stated that he had submitted an official request for an extension along with the necessary supporting documents.

The procedure for requesting an extension of the medical treatment period is standard and applies to all prisoners who are unable to complete their treatment within the initially allotted timeframe. The Correctional Service’s medical board will review the documents submitted by Adeeb and make a decision based on the information provided.

According to Adeeb’s political party, the Maldives Third Way Democrats (MTD), he is currently facing a life-threatening neurological disease, and several doctors from different hospitals have advised him to seek medical treatment abroad.
