The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) has launched a campaign to increase public awareness of the law and help build a more legally informed society.
The Engumakee Baareh campaign, meaning “Knowledge is Power”, was launched last Friday on the initiative of the AGO. The office said the programme aims to familiarise the public with laws and help citizens understand their legal rights and responsibilities.
Speaking to PSM News, the AGO said greater legal awareness can clarify the rights and powers afforded to citizens and empower people to make informed decisions. The campaign is being carried out under the AIM Project with financial assistance from the European Union (EU) and is currently planned to run for one year.
The AGO said it hopes to extend the campaign if additional funding becomes available.
The campaign will use social media, news media, videos and mobile platforms to disseminate legal information. The AGO is conducting the initiative in collaboration with UNDP Maldives to make legal information more accessible to the public.
As part of the campaign, the AGO also plans to conduct outreach activities on different islands and targeted programmes for school students across the Maldives. These activities will focus on providing information on laws and legal matters relevant to everyday life.
The office said strengthening public legal awareness, increasing trust in the legal system and upholding the rule of law remain key priorities.
