Air quality monitoring systems have shown that air pollution levels in the Malé region are at dangerously high levels today, posing a risk to all residents.

Data from an air quality monitor installed at the Maldives National University’s Centre for Maritime Studies in Villingili recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 179, placing the area under a red alert. A privately operated monitoring system in Malé measured an AQI of 139, which falls under the orange alert category.

An AQI reading between 151 and 200 is considered unhealthy for the general population, while levels between 101 and 150 pose health risks to vulnerable groups, including children, older people, and those with respiratory conditions.

According to IQAir, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations in Villingili reached 95 micrograms per cubic metre, a level 19 times higher than the World Health Organization’s recommended limit.

Authorities have advised residents to reduce outdoor activities, wear face masks when outside, keep windows and doors closed, and use air purifiers indoors where possible.

Other areas across the country have also reported elevated pollution levels. AQI readings stood at 161 in Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo, 155 in Laamu Gan, 109 in Shaviyani Funadhoo, 82 in Fuvahmulah City, and 69 in Addu City. Darkened skies and reduced visibility were observed in several locations throughout the day.
