Baa Atoll, Thulhaadhoo, Team Wins National Reef Fishing Competition on World Oceans Day

The Ministry of Fisheries, Agriculture and Ocean Resources has awarded the winners of a nationwide reef fishing competition held to mark World Oceans Day, with Team Dhonismail from Baa Atoll, Thulhaadhoo, securing first place.
A total of 109 teams took part in the one-day tournament, which was open to participants across the Maldives. The competition was held from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm, with activities centred at the Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal area in the Greater Malé region and designated fishing zones in the atolls.
Team Dhonismail from Baa Atoll, Thulhaadhoo, won first place and will receive a cash prize of MVR 30,000. Team Magiclean from Fuvahmulah City finished second and will receive MVR 25,000, while Team Kalhakaundu from Thaa Atoll, Hirilandhoo, placed third and will receive MVR 20,000.
Mohamed Habeeb Riyaaz of Team Dhonismail also won the award for the heaviest fish caught during the tournament. He received MVR 5,000 after landing a fish weighing 50.65 kilogrammes.
Eighteen teams from the Greater Malé Area participated in the competition. With support from the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), separate prizes were awarded to the top-performing teams from the region.
Team Chill Bros secured first place among Greater Malé participants and received MVR 15,000. Team Enzi Maldives placed second and received MVR 10,000, while Team Silver Grantar finished third and received MVR 5,000.
The tournament was open to all Maldivian citizens. In Malé City, participation was limited to the first 20 teams that completed the application process and met the eligibility requirements. According to the ministry, the event formed part of activities organised to commemorate World Oceans Day and promote sustainable engagement with the country’s marine resources.
