The Cabinet has established new benchmarks to drive economic prosperity across key sectors in the coming year, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Mohamed Saeed, announced.

The government has designated 2026 as the “Year of Maldives’ Productivity” in a renewed effort to accelerate progress toward the nation’s long-term development goals. The announcement was made during the 63rd anniversary celebration of the national radio station Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu.

Minister Saeed highlighted that achieving developed-nation status by 2040 requires consistent per capita economic growth of five to six percent annually. To meet this target, the government plans to implement sector-specific performance standards and encourage reforms in national institutions, including the media, to engage youth and workers in development initiatives.

He called on citizens to embrace a collective vision for a fully developed Maldives and stressed the importance of accurate information and media in shaping public perceptions and supporting progress.

Public Service Media (PSM) Managing Director Ahmed Shakeeb praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s commitment to media modernisation and expressed confidence in PSM’s continued growth under the current leadership. He emphasised the need for unity in preserving national identity.

The anniversary event also recognised the winners of the Children’s News Reading Competition and the Poetry Competition, and celebrated the audience’s favourite radio presenter.
