The Maldives Meteorological Service (MMS) has released its outlook for the Southwest Monsoon Season spanning June to September 2024, providing insights into anticipated precipitation and temperature patterns across the archipelago.

According to the forecast, the central and northern regions of the Maldives are likely to experience above-normal rainfall during the specified period. Conversely, below-normal rainfall is anticipated for the southern part of the country. Additionally, both maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to surpass the usual range across the entirety of the Maldives.

The determination of normal, above-normal, and below-normal precipitation levels is based on specific criteria established by Maldivian authorities. These classifications are defined as follows:

  • Normal: Rainfall falling within 90% to 110% of the average for the given period.
  • Above Normal: Rainfall exceeding 110% of the average for the given period.
  • Below Normal: Rainfall amounting to less than 90% of the average for the given period.

The MMS’s forecast provides valuable insights for residents, businesses, and policymakers to prepare for potential weather-related impacts during the Southwest Monsoon Season, enabling effective mitigation and response measures where necessary.
