A petition being circulated online is calling on the government to reverse it’s decision to allow 10-storey buildings to be built in Villimale’ — the small suburban island west of Male’ City.

The government changed Male’ planning regulations in early May to allow the construction of 10-storey buildings in Villimale. Regulations previously only allowed the maximum height of buildings to be 6-storeys.

The online petition reasoned that due to the new ongoing housing projects in the greater male region it was no longer necessary to “compromise the quality of life that is currently available in Villimale’ by increasing the building height and increasing population”

“We need to learn lessons from the development of Male’ and ensure that other islands and cities are not overpopulated and therefore liveable.”

Concerns outlined in the petition include the potential exacerbation of congestion on the island’s narrow roads due to increased population. Additionally, it highlights the loss of natural green spaces, which currently serve as havens for residents, particularly children and the elderly, and provide vital flood drainage capabilities.

Villimale’ is recognised as a highly desirable area to live within the Male’ region, offering a model for liveable communities. Advocates argue that it should serve as an example for future developments across Greater Male’ and beyond.

“We need to ensure islands maintain population caps, so that islands have enough green spaces, natural beaches and roads to cater both pedestrians and vehicles.” the petition continues. “Population density matters to foster and create a liveable and caring neighbourhood where social and economic issues can be managed”

Villimale’ stands out in the greater Male’ region for its abundant green spaces, natural beaches, and preserved habitats. These areas are utilised for educational and recreational purposes by both residents and visitors.

“The haven it provides is not only for the residents of Villimale’ but for more than 40% of all Maldivians and the many expat workers who now live in this area. The further damaging of what is now left, is wholly unacceptable. Our future and younger generations deserve better from us.” the petition concludes.

The petition calls on the government to revert to the previous building height limit of 6 storeys in Villimale’ and to prioritise the creation of liveable communities across the greater Male’ area.
