A Chinese tourist couple has died after drowning while swimming at a resort in Dhaalu Atoll, the Maldives Police Service has confirmed.
In a statement sent to the media, police said the two tourists were found unconscious in the lagoon at Kandima Maldives and were immediately transferred to the Dhaalu Atoll Regional Hospital in Kudahuvadhoo. Police confirmed that both individuals were declared dead on arrival at the medical facility.
Local authorities and resort management have launched a joint investigation to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
The tragedy adds to a series of recent maritime incidents across the archipelago that have drawn heightened attention to water safety standards for tourists and rescue personnel alike.
Last month, a 55-year-old tourist from Kazakhstan died after being found motionless underwater while diving in Fuvahmulah.
Earlier this year in May, a 53-year-old Spanish national died after drowning while surfing near Vaadhoo in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.
The latest drowning follows a complex search-and-rescue operation launched in Vaavu Atoll after five Italian tourists went missing during an underwater cave dive.
While one diver was initially recovered dead, the remaining missing divers were subsequently located during a joint recovery operation involving the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard, the Maldives Police Service, and specialist Finnish deep-diving experts deployed with support from the Italian government.
The operation also resulted in the death of MNDF diver Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee. Authorities attributed his death to decompression illness, although the exact cause had not been formally confirmed pending a post-mortem examination.
