The Malé City Council has announced that priority for free venues to host first-time marriage feasts (Walima) will be given to couples who face financial difficulties.

The council approved a decision yesterday to provide free spaces in Malé for newly married couples to hold their first wedding celebrations, fulfilling a campaign pledge made by Mayor Adam Azim and several council members during the previous council election.

The Mayor said the free venues would primarily be allocated to individuals who struggle to find affordable wedding spaces and those who lack the financial means to arrange a venue.

The mayor said some individuals remain unmarried due to financial constraints, and the initiative aims to support those facing such challenges.

While the council has approved the provision of free wedding venues, it has not yet announced which specific locations in Malé will be allocated for the purpose. Furthermore, the council said that work is ongoing to draft criteria to follow to provide the free venues.
