Minister of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said construction of the new school building in B. Kamadhoo will begin later this year, with the project expected to be completed during the first academic term next year.

Shafeeu made the remarks in Parliament today while responding to a question from Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, who asked why work on the pledged school development had not begun and whether the project would be completed under the current administration, including the installation of air conditioning before the end of the presidential term.

The minister said the previous administration had planned a new school building for Baa Atoll, Kamadhoo, in 2023 comprising two classrooms and an office building. However, he said the project was not allocated funding in the state budget before the change of government following the 2023 presidential election.

According to Shafeeu, the current administration subsequently included the project in its 2024 education infrastructure plan alongside other unfunded projects.

He said the scope of the project was later revised following requests from residents, expanding the plan to include six classrooms and an office building. He added that the limited space available for construction required extensive technical assessments and planning to determine the most suitable design.

“It’s not right to say development work isn’t moving forward at all. This is something that’s directly tied to the project,” Shafeeu said.

The minister said structural drawings are now being finalised. He added that construction is expected to begin during the second academic term this year, with completion targeted for the first academic term next year.
