The government has begun public consultations to gather ideas for a national campaign aimed at promoting respect and good manners in Maldivian society, an initiative being developed at the request of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
The consultation process is being organised by the Office of National Identity under the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage. The first meeting was opened by Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed during a ceremony held at the ministry.
According to the government, the campaign is intended to revive and strengthen traditional values of respect and courtesy that it says have gradually declined in Maldivian society. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to preserve the country’s national identity.
Speaking at the opening of the consultations, Heena said the campaign would be shaped by ideas and recommendations gathered from across the community. She noted that historical accounts by foreign visitors described Maldivians as a people known for their respect, hospitality and good manners, but said many of these customs had diminished over time.
The minister said the consultation process is expected to generate recommendations that will help guide the development of the campaign.
The government will seek input from clubs, non-governmental organisations, community groups and political parties from across the Maldives.
President Muizzu has previously stated that the country’s national identity had weakened before his administration took office. He has said the government has since launched several initiatives to strengthen national identity, promote the Dhivehi language, research Maldivian history and revive aspects of the country’s cultural heritage.
The President has also emphasised the importance of cooperation from civil servants and public institutions in supporting these efforts.
