The Health Ministry of the Maldives has disclosed that 22 individuals are presently undergoing treatment for AIDS in the country.

This announcement coincides with World AIDS Day, observed on Friday, December 1, marking the global effort to raise awareness about the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The first case of HIV in the Maldives was identified in 1991, and since then, the Health Ministry’s statistics reveal that by the end of 2022, 40 people had contracted HIV in the nation. Among these cases, 6 were women and 34 were men, with 15 of them succumbing to AIDS-related complications. The remaining 22 individuals are currently receiving ongoing medical care.

In light of these developments, the Health Ministry emphasises the importance of HIV/AIDS prevention. Although there is no cure for HIV, the infection is preventable, and with access to effective treatment, individuals with HIV can manage it as a chronic health condition.

The Ministry underscores that, with proper and regular care, those infected can lead healthy, normal lives, even though they may appear outwardly healthy to others.
