The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure has extended the deadline for applications for 100 housing units developed in B. Thulhaadhoo and Th. Vilufushi.

In an announcement issued, the ministry stated that applications can now be submitted until 23:59 on Thursday through the Hiyaavehi Portal, after the previous deadline had been set for Saturday.

Eligibility criteria for the housing units in Thulhaadhoo include individuals who are residents of the island, as well as those who have migrated and lived there continuously for at least 10 years.

The opposition Maldivian Democratic Party has raised concerns regarding the decision to reopen the application process, alleging that a previously compiled permanent list under the former administration was cancelled and that reopening the forms could be aimed at influencing the upcoming council elections.

The party also stated that excluding the local council from the process contradicts constitutional principles and undermines the intent of the Decentralisation Act.

In September last year, residents of Thulhaadhoo staged protests outside the council office over delays in allocating the housing units, after which the council released a permanent list of recipients based on a points system.
