The Democrats, under the leadership of former President Mohamed Nasheed, have successfully completed the registration process with the Election Commission, marking their official establishment as a political party.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice-President of the Election Commission, confirmed that the Democrats have been included in the register of political parties. The decision to register the party was reached unanimously yesterday during the commission’s general meeting.

According to the requirements outlined in the Political Parties Act, the Democrats convened a meeting to formally establish the party and subsequently applied for registration last Sunday.

Moreover, the party’s executive committee has been granted approval, with Hassan Latheef assuming the role of interim chairman. Among the three vice-chairpersons is Afshan Latheef, formerly the CEO of the Local Government Authority (LGA).

Former President Nasheed, who remains actively engaged in party activities, is scheduled to formally join the Democrats today by signing up as a member. He emphasized that the formation of the Democrats signifies the largest split within the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), with the new party consisting of approximately 80 percent of the original membership.
