The ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) has expelled a senior member, Dhiggaru MP and Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Ahmed Nazim, from the party’s official WhatsApp group.
The digital platform serves as the primary communication hub for the parliamentary group and is administered by the President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. A member of the ruling party confirmed the removal, which signals a potential rift within the party despite its current supermajority in the People’s Majlis.
The move follows a period of heightened political speculation after the PNC’s recent performance in local council elections and a referendum vote. In the wake of those results, rumours began to circulate that a petition was being organised to file a no-confidence motion against Nazim to remove him from his post as Deputy Speaker. However, Ibrahim Falaah, the leader of the PNC parliamentary group, has dismissed these claims to the media, stating that no such action had been taken and that no grounds for such a motion existed.
Despite these denials, Nazim’s influence within the legislature appears to have been significantly curtailed. He has been removed from his positions on the parliament’s two most powerful committees, the Security Services Committee (241 committee) and the Public Finance Committee. He has since been reassigned to the Environment Committee.
Throughout these internal developments, Nazim has continued to perform his constitutional duties, frequently chairing parliamentary sessions in the absence of the Speaker, Abdul Raheem Abdulla.
Neither the President’s Office nor Mr Nazim have provided any comment on the specific reasons behind these changes.
