Dr Ahmed Riyaz was appointed to the role following the conclusion of the term of Aishath Hassan, who previously carried out these responsibilities, last month.

Holding a PhD in Educational Psychology, Dr Riyaz has also worked as a mathematics teacher and served as a Senior Policy Executive at the National Institute of Education (NIE).

The appointment falls under the provisions of the Maldives Statistics Act, which sets out the operational framework for data collection and public sector oversight. Under the legal framework, the Minister of Finance and Government Companies retains parliamentary accountability for the bureau’s broader governance and policies. While liaising directly with the Finance Minister, who provides strategic oversight and advisory input, the Chief Statistician will manage day-to-day operations at the bureau.

Under the current law, core priorities include the strengthening of the national statistical framework, alongside the systematic collection and distribution of uniform data regarding the country’s economic, social, and environmental conditions.

Under the Statistics Act enacted five years ago, the post of Chief Statistician is an appointment made by the President. The salary and allowances for the post are set equivalent to those of a Deputy Minister.
