Dr Ahmed Shamheed Joins MDP Presidential Primary Race

South Hulhumalé MP Dr Ahmed Shamheed has announced his decision to enter the contest for the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primary, stating that the decision honours a key pledge made to his constituents during his 2024 parliamentary campaign.

Speaking on the premiere episode of the online interview series ‘With Shamheed’ aired by online newspaper Avas, the lawmaker confirmed his bid for the party ticket, joining an expanding field of candidates competing to lead the opposition into the next election cycle.

MV Plus reached out to Dr Shamheed for comment on his decision to contest the MDP presidential primary, but did not receive a response at the time of publication.

Dr Shamheed is a civil engineer who holds a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Leeds. He is currently serving his first term in the People’s Majlis after winning the South Hulhumalé constituency on an MDP ticket in April 2024. He previously served as Minister of Transport and Communication in 2012 and was formerly associated with the Jumhooree Party (JP) before joining the MDP in November 2013.

Dr Shamheed’s entry further intensifies the contest within the MDP, where high-profile party figures have already launched active campaigns across the atolls.

Former Economic Minister and former MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail was the first to publicly declare his intentions, with the backing of former president and current MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed.

Meanwhile, Abdulla Shahid, former Foreign Minister and former President of the United Nations General Assembly, has officially launched his candidacy and commenced nationwide campaigning after resigning as the president of MDP. 

Two months ago, former Vice President Faisal Naseem likewise expressed interest in seeking the MDP presidential ticket. However, he has not yet launched an official campaign or formally announced a decision.
