The Election Commission (EC) has declared that the nominations for the upcoming presidential election will commence on July 23rd.

In a tweet, Commission Vice-President Ismail Habeeb confirmed that candidates wishing to contest the election scheduled for September 9th can submit their applications from July 23rd until August 7th.

Initially, the deadline for submitting nomination forms was set at 10 days. However, the EC has extended the deadline to 14 days, granting candidates an additional four days to complete the nomination process. It is important to note that this amendment to the Presidential Election Act does not affect the date of candidate nominations.

According to the Election Commission, the opportunity to participate in the upcoming five-year presidential term will be available starting on July 23rd. When the September 9th presidential election was announced, the commission initially set the deadline for nominations from July 23rd to August 7th. However, with the recent amendment to the General Election Act, the nomination period has been extended from 10 to 14 days.

Regarding the amendment, Habeeb clarified that it does not alter the date for sorting the names of candidates. The Election Commission has taken into account the relevant legislation when establishing the crucial dates for the presidential election.

The draw to determine the order of candidates will take place on Wednesday, August 9th, providing contestants with a 30-day period for their campaigns.
