In a tweet today, EC Vice-President Ismail Habeeb announced that the commission has granted permission to hold a meeting for the purpose of forming a political party under the name of The Democrats.
The proposal to register The Democrats as a political party was put forth by members who parted ways with the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) following a disagreement with the government.
While the permission to form the party was granted today, the Election Commission had initially scheduled a meeting for this purpose. However, the meeting had to be cancelled as three members of the commission chose not to attend, citing a lack of confidence in the EC chairman.
Consequently, the lack of a quorum resulted in the permission not being granted on the initially planned day of The Democrats’ formation.
Nevertheless, following a delayed period, the EC made the decision on the 25th of last month to allow the party to commence its operations after the Eid holiday.
