The Election Commission of the Maldives (EC) has issued a directive mandating the opening of a special bank account by each candidate in order to cover their election-related expenses.

The EC Vice President, Ismail Habeeb, announced this requirement in a series of tweets, stating that the account should be established in the candidate’s name.

According to Habeeb, all expenses incurred by presidential candidates during the election period must be made through the newly opened bank account. Additionally, any funds received by the candidates leading up to the elections must also be deposited into this designated account.

To facilitate this process for the candidates, the EC sought the assistance of the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) to ensure the smooth opening of these bank accounts. Habeeb confirmed that the MMA will coordinate with the banks to simplify the account creation procedure for the candidates.

As of now, applications to contest in the upcoming elections remain open until July 23. Candidates will be provided with a 14-day period, as stipulated by existing regulations, to file their applications.
