ECM Announces By-Elections on July 20

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) stated that a total of eight by-elections will be held on July 20, including the three vacancies in Male’ City Council, in an announcement today.

The additional by-elections will be conducted for the following positions:

  • President of Lhaviyani Atoll Council
  • President of Faafu Atoll Bilehdhoo Council
  • North Constituency Councilor for Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kulhudhuffushi Council
  • Councilor for Raa Atoll Hulhudhuffaaru Council
  • Female Councilor of the Raa Atoll Rasmaadhoo Council
  • Vacant seats for Male’ City Council. 

The Male’ City Council seats became vacant after Ibrahim Shujau, Councilor for Hulhumale’ Constituency; Ahmed Zameer, Councilor for Central Machangolhi Constituency; and Ahmed Aifaan, Councilor for West Henveiru Constituency, resigned to assume their new roles as parliament members.

ECM also revealed that the nomination window for these by-elections has been extended from May 30 until 16:00 on Friday, June 14.

According to the Maldivian constitution, a by-election must be held within 60 days of a council seat becoming vacant.
