ECM Extends Polling Hours Amid Weather Concerns

MV+ News Desk | April 17, 2024

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has opted to extend the polling hours for the upcoming parliamentary elections until 5:30 pm, a decision made in response to concerns raised about potential disruptions due to inclement weather.

This decision follows deliberations held by the National Elections Advisory Committee, where the possibility of extending polling hours in the event of rain on election day was discussed. The Maldives is currently experiencing erratic weather patterns, characterized by intense heat, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and subsequent flooding.

During yesterday’s meeting, representatives from various political parties and independent institutions voiced their support for extending polling hours, citing the challenging weather conditions regardless of rain.

Originally scheduled from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, the polling hours for Sunday’s parliamentary elections have now been extended following this morning meeting convened by the ECM, aligning with the recommendation put forth by the advisory committee.

The decision to extend polling hours reflects concerns expressed by committee members regarding the potential impact of adverse weather on voter turnout.

A total of 368 candidates are vying for 93 parliamentary seats in this year’s elections, with the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) fielding the highest number of candidates, contesting 90 seats, followed closely by candidates from the ruling PPM-PNC coalition.
