ECM Officially Opens Applications for Presidential Election 2023!

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has officially opened applications for Presidential Election 2023 candidacy. The nomination period will be open from July 23rd, Sunday 9:00 am, until August 7th, Monday, 2:00 pm.

Candidates vying for the position of President can submit their applications at the Election Center, also known as Darubaaruge, during the stipulated period. 

ECM will be accepting applications every day, except Sundays, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. On Sundays, the commission will extend the application acceptance time from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

According to the constitutional provisions and the Presidential Election Act, candidates seeking the presidency must meet specific criteria, which are as follows:

  • The candidate must be a Maldivian citizen, born to a Maldivian mother and father, and must not hold foreign citizenship.
  • The candidate must be a Muslim and a member of the Sunni community.
  • The candidate must be at least thirty-five years of age.
  • The candidate must be of sound mind.
  • The candidate must not have any proven unpaid debts.
  • If the candidate has been convicted of a criminal offence and served a sentence of more than twelve months, at least three years must have passed since the completion of the sentence or the pardon of the imposed sentence.
  • The candidate must not have been convicted of offences prescribed in Islam or offences related to fraud, taxation, or treason, regardless of the provision mentioned in point six.
  • The same eligibility requirements apply to candidates vying for the position of Vice-President

Additionally, General Elections Act mandates that every candidate participating in the election must appoint an official electoral agent before entering the race. This agent must fulfil the following conditions:

  • The electoral agent cannot be a candidate contesting the election.
  • The electoral agent cannot be a person assigned by the Election Commission to manage the election process.
  • The electoral agent must not have any proven unpaid debts in accordance with a court judgment.
  • The electoral agent must be eligible to vote in the election.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held in the Maldives on Monday 9 September 2023.
