The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has initiated the application process for the forthcoming parliamentary elections.

In an official announcement published today, the ECM outlined the guidelines for candidacy applications. Nominations will be received daily from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, with the exception of Sundays, when applications will be accepted from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.

As per the specified criteria, candidates aspiring to contest in the parliamentary elections must meet several requirements, including Maldivian citizenship, exclusion from foreign citizenship, adherence to the Muslim faith, specifically as a member of the Sunni community, attainment of the age of 18, and possession of sound mental faculties.

Moreover, individuals holding foreign citizenship who have acquired Maldivian citizenship are eligible for candidacy after a five-year period from the date of naturalization, provided they are residents of the Maldives.

The parliamentary elections are slated to take place on March 17. Notably, the ECM has proactively addressed concerns regarding potential congestion on voting day, as it coincides with the month of Ramadan, aiming to ensure a smooth and efficient electoral process.
