The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has opened the nomination period for the Hithadhoo North constituency by-election of the 20th People’s Majlis, following a Supreme Court ruling that declared the seat vacant.
The by-election has been scheduled to take place on Saturday, 6 June.
The by-election follows a ruling by the Supreme Court declaring the Hithadhoo North parliamentary seat vacant. The court determined that former MP Mohamed Shinan had failed to settle a court-ordered debt, thereby disqualifying him from holding the seat.
The application window for prospective candidates opened today and will close at 3:00 p.m. on 29 April.
Applications may be submitted either electronically or in person to the Elections Commission, according to the ECM.
For email submissions, candidates are required to send their completed forms and supporting documents to candidacy@elections.gov.mv, with the total file size not exceeding 10 MB. The Commission has stated that applicants are responsible for ensuring successful delivery and receipt of submission.
Alternatively, candidates may submit applications in person at the Elections Commission headquarters at the Port Complex, 5th Floor, Hilaalee Magu, Malé.
In-person submissions are accepted from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. daily, except Fridays, when the office operates from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
