The names of the candidates contesting in the parliamentary by-election for the North Hithadhoo constituency were sequenced today.
The by-election, scheduled for 6 June, will see former Addu City Mayor Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe) representing the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), and Ahmed Saeed (Soda) representing the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC).
The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) assigned the ballot order as follows:
- Candidate Number 1: Ahmed Saeed (Soda)
- Candidate Number 2: Abdulla Sodiq (Sobe)
Since no other candidate applied for the MDP ticket, Sodiq was confirmed as the party’s nominee.
For the PNC, former MP Mohamed Sinan had initially won the party’s primary for the constituency against Saeed but later relinquished the ticket. The party subsequently reassigned the candidacy to Saeed.
The ECM confirmed that voting will take place on 6 June from 8:00am to 4:00pm.
The North Hithadhoo seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling. The case related to former MP Mohamed Sinan, who was elected in 2024 but was found to have an outstanding debt that he failed to settle in line with a court judgment.
According to the voter registry published by the ECM, 4,114 voters are eligible to participate in the by-election.
