The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced that political party enrollment will now be processed exclusively through the national digital identity system, e-Faas.

Under the revised regulations, individuals can join political parties only by submitting forms available on the Elections Commission’s “My Portal.” Once a form is approved, the respective party will be notified. Before an individual is added to a party register, the Elections Commission must verify whether any complaints have been raised regarding the enrollment. The new rules also require parties to retain online application records for ten years.

The change comes in response to an increase in fraudulent party enrollments. In the past six months, 300 cases have been reported where individuals were unknowingly registered into political parties. The issue gained renewed attention after the ruling People’s National Congress experienced a significant rise in membership, increasing from 3,000 to 60,000 during its recruitment drive.

The existing registration portal has been temporarily suspended as security upgrades are implemented to address these concerns.
