The Ministry of Education has issued a directive instructing the removal of books and materials deemed inconsistent with Islamic principles and Dhivehi culture.
A circular from the ministry has urged schools to conduct thorough reviews of their library collections, ensuring that the content aligns with the values of Islam and the cultural norms of the Maldivian people.
Furthermore, schools have been advised to get books donated by private individuals or other entities to ascertain their suitability for students before inclusion in library resources.
In cases where materials are found to be in violation of the specified criteria, schools are encouraged to contact the ministry for guidance on appropriate disposal methods.
Instances of books, including those in school libraries, containing content considered anti-religious have been reported.
The ministry’s recent circular aims to address these concerns and maintain alignment with cultural and religious sensitivities in educational environments.
